The "Centre for Functional and Surface Functionalized Glass (FunGlass)" is an EU HORIZON 2020 funded project based at Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín (Slovakia) coordinated by prof. Dušan Galusek. The Institute of Biomaterials at University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini) is an international partner in FunGlass together with Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany), Spanish National Research Council (Spain) and University of Padova (Italy). FunGlass specializes in cutting edge research in the area of glasses with special functional properties and in the functionalization of conventional glasses with the aim to modify their properties and to add new functionalities. The Institute of Biomaterials at FAU, as a project partner, provides intensive research training in the field of bioactive glasses and composites, including processing and characterization using world class experimental facilities. In particular, the synthesis of bioactive glasses by the sol-gel method, the fabrication and characterization of bioactive glass-based scaffolds, the development of bioactive glass containing coatings and of different types of polymer-bioactive glass composites are in the focus of this training program.
